This 5-week foundational course explores the theories, research, and key dimensions of social-emotional learning (SEL), and school culture and climate, and the role they play in shaping children’s emotional development, academic success, and future life and career choices.
SEL201: LEADERSHIP COURSE :
Leadership in School-Wide
and Character Development
This 12-week course develops unique leadership qualities and practices in educators and administrators by guiding them through the process of creating efficient strategies, networks and systems for leading sustainable school-wide SEL and school culture/climate initiatives.
SEL301: PRACTICUM COURSE :
Implementing and Leading a
Social-Emotional Learning and
School Culture/Climate Initiative
This 16-week, project-oriented practicum course provides participants with a supportive, structured environment to plan, develop and execute an individualized strategic plan for implementing a school-wide social-emotional learning and school culture and climate initiative.
SEL School Leader Certificate Overview
The Certificate in School Leadership for Social-Emotional Learning and Character Development is a 3-course, post-baccalaureate certificate program that prepares school leaders to implement social-emotional learning (SEL) initiatives and promote a positive culture and climate in their schools. The certificate includes a foundational course, a leadership-centered course, and a project-based practicum, which is supported by an experienced mentor. The program is designed to give participants the knowledge and skills to coordinate SEL implementation efforts in their own schools, with emphasis on school climate, culture, values, leadership, student voice and engagement, and SEL skills development. Effectively organizing these initiatives requires a high degree of support and preparation. In addition to the mentor-supported practicum, the online professional learning community is designed to provide participants with ongoing support, resources and inspiration for as long as they need it.

What is the Online Professional Learning Community?
Program participants receive lifetime access to the online learning community of SEL and school culture/climate innovators and practitioners as well as our regularly updated resources. Leading social-emotional learning and school culture/climate initiatives requires a great deal of collaboration, teamwork and partnership. A hallmark of our certificate program is the high degree of collaborative learning built on supportive, caring, and respectful relationships between you, the program facilitators, other participants in your learning cohort, and the members of the professional learning community. Participants will become professionally acquainted with other members in the community and discover common threads between themselves and other like-minded school leaders with whom they will be learning collaboratively with throughout the program, and beyond.
Our online professional learning community is a safe and secure environment where you can feel confident and empowered to build lasting professional relationships and the necessary skills to help you achieve your organizational or professional goals. The community is staffed by a team of Community Resource Managers, who regularly curate and share the most recent and relevant resources, tools, and learning opportunities, which are available exclusively to program participants. Ongoing participation in the community will be an important part of your continued implementation support system, and essential for long-term, sustainable success in bringing positive change to your school or district.
The certificate program consists of two expert-facilitated online courses and a project-based practicum course. All instruction and interaction takes place online in both synchronous (live online events) and asynchronous (self-paced) formats. The program can be completed in 1 year. Completion of the program will result in a professional studies certificate from the College of Saint Elizabeth. The online professional learning community will support ongoing collaboration and informal learning opportunities for program participants.
Prospective participants should have a school certificate (e.g., a teaching credential, school counselor, principal/supervisor certificate). Participants should have some school leadership experience either currently or in the past, or, currently be enrolled in an education leadership preparation program or other applicable education-related degree program.

SEL101: Foundations Course
Research and Innovations in Social-Emotional Learning and Positive School Culture/Climate (5 Weeks)
A research-based foundation in the basic components of School Culture and Climate (SCC) is introduced along with pioneering examples of successful SCC implementation in school settings. Participants will evaluate and develop their own social-emotional “EQ” skills to prepare for leadership in strategic change within their school or district. Participants will identify, practice and apply strategies to explain the concepts and approaches of SEL in a broader educational context to various audiences. The course will culminate in assessing and presenting what is required to improve the participant’s own school culture and climate and what strategies can be used most effectively to promote schools of moral and performance character to staff, parents, and decision makers.
SEL201: Leadership Course
Leadership in School-wide Social-Emotional Learning and Character Development (12 Weeks)
Theory is turned into practice as participants learn and implement techniques to discern the various competing efforts in a school to promote SEL, character development, and a positive culture/climate. Participants will learn the procedures for creating and leading an infrastructure in a school to initiate, guide, manage, and sustain positive changes in SEL, CD, and SCC. Participants will evaluate strategies to adapt to changes in mandates and other local conditions. The culminating project will include incorporating current research and best practices in SEL, CD and SCC to develop and implement a strategic implementation plan for creating wide adoption among various school and community constituencies.
SEL301: Practicum Course
Implementing and Leading a Social-Emotional Learning and School Culture/Climate Initiative (16 Weeks)
This expert-supervised, project-based practicum course will provide the support, guidance and mentorship of an experienced practitioner in the areas of social-emotional learning, school culture and climate, and character education. Participants are guided by experienced school leaders with significant experience in implementing and managing school-wide SEL, SCC and CD initiatives. The online learning community will provide a network of peer participants who are working on parallel SEL-related projects, throughout the United States and abroad. As a participant in this program, you will be part of a worldwide community dedicated to improving the lives of children by leading schools that strive to be models in innovative education and academic best practices.
