SEL201: LEADERSHIP COURSE :
Leadership in School-Wide
and Character Development
This 12-week online course builds upon the concepts from SEL101 and begins to examine personal leadership qualities and styles that are most effective and important for coordinating social-emotional learning (SEL) programs and initiatives in your school. After completing this course you will have the knowledge, skills and an implementation plan to develop and lead a formal structure and process in your school that will incorporate social-emotional learning and character development-related programs into your school community.
The requirements to complete this course include attending five (5) pre-scheduled online workshops (see workshop calendar for dates), engaging in twelve (12) online class discussions, and completing one (1) final project, which culminates in an implementation plan that you will use to guide an SEL program or initiative at your school.
The primary goal of SEL201 is to help you to understand and implement the pragmatic elements of a successful and sustainable school-wide SEL/SECD and school culture and climate initiative from an organizational/systems perspective. These elements include how to:
1) create effective teams and how leaders and teams embark on the journey of change when implementing SEL/SECD initiatives to improve school culture and climate,
2) assess school climate,
3) improve anti-bullying policies and practices,
4) empower student voice, and
5) gain buy-in from relevant stakeholders.
Participants who complete SEL201 will be eligible to participate in the 16-week guided practicum, which will provide school leaders and teachers with direct practice in implementing a social-emotional learning or school culture and climate initiative. Successful completion of the practicum will make participants eligible for the Certificate in School Leadership for SEL and Character Development from the Academy.
